A wonderful community initiative in Ocean Park has taken root. On November 12, many community members showed up to the location at 128th Street and 22nd Avenue, despite the rain, to help. Over 150 volunteers of all ages planted 34 trees, 2300 bulbs and many berry bushes on the city owned land. We can’t wait to see how it turns out next spring!
The idea for the orchard stemmed from a desire to create a community gathering place where all could work together. The idea was approved by the City in July of this year, about one year after the concept was created.
Periodically there will be workshops held at the orchard and it will be planted in phases. Working in cooperation with those behind the Alexandra Neighbourhood House Community Garden to co-operate in soil delivery and “other big things where there is a cost involved.”
How wonderful it is to live in a community that advocates for such a great cause. We hope to see you at the Orchard. Bring the kids to learn more about where their food comes from be sure to check out the workshops to learn more together!
